Crochet Hook: 5mm [US H-8].
Yarn needle; split lock stitch markers; five 13/16" diameter buttons; sewing needle and thread.
GAUGE: 17 sts = 5"; 14 rows = 5" in pat. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
To Fit Chest: 17 (18, 19)". Finished Chest: 18 (20, 21 3/4)".
BACK: Ch 32 (35, 38). Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; turn – 31 (34, 37) sc.
Row 2: Ch 3, skip first sc; * skip next sc, dc in next sc, dc in skipped sc working over and enclosing previous dc – crossed dc made; dc in next sc; rep from * across; turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across and in top of ch-3; turn.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 for pat until 9 1/2 (10, 11)" from beg. Fasten off.
FRONTS: Ch 14 (17, 20). Work same as Back over 13 (16, 19) sts until 3 rows less than Back to top.
Shape Neck-Next Row: Keeping continuity of pat, skip (skip = sl st across first OR omit working in last) 3 (6, 9) sts at neck edge – 10 sts. Work 2 more rows even. Fasten off.
SLEEVES: Ch 20 (23, 26). Work same as Back over 19 (22, 25) sts, shaping sides by inc 1 st each end of 3rd row, then every right side row until there are 31 (34, 37) sts, working added sts into pat. Work even until 6 (7, 8)" from beg. Fasten off.
Sleeve Edging: With right side facing, join yarn at lower edge; ch 1, work 19 (22, 25) sc across; turn. Work 1 more row sc. Fasten off.
FINISHING: Sew shoulder seams. Mark fronts and back 4 1/2 (5, 5 1/2)" down from seams. Place center of sleeve tops at shoulder seams and sew in place between markers. Sew side and sleeve seams.
Lower Body Edging: With right side facing, join yarn at corner of left front lower edge; ch 1, work sc evenly across to corner of right front lower edge; turn. Work 1 more row sc. Fasten off.
Button Band (Left Front for Girls/Right Front for Boys): With right side facing, join yarn and work 5 rows sc evenly across front edge. Fasten off.
Buttonhole Band (Right Front for Girls/Left Front for Boys): With right side facing, join yarn and work 2 rows sc evenly across front edge. Mark for 5 evenly spaced buttonholes. Buttonhole Row: Ch 1, [sc to marker, ch 2, skip 2 sc] 5 times, sc to end; turn. Next Row: Ch 1, [sc to sp, 2 sc in sp] 5 times, sc to end; turn. Work 1 more row sc. Fasten off. Sew buttons to button band to correspond to buttonholes.
HOOD: Ch 53 (56, 59). Work same as Back over 52 (55, 58) sts until 6 (6 1/2, 7)" from beg. Fasten off.
Hood Front Edging: With right side facing, join yarn at beg ch edge of hood; ch 1, work 52 (55, 58) sc across; turn. Work 1 more row sc. Fasten off.
Sew back hood seam. Sew hood along neck between inside edges of front bands.
