GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

SLEEVE (Make 2): Cast on 23 (27, 29) sts. Knit
5
rows. Now work in St st, beg K row, shaping sides by
inc 1 st each end of 7th row, then every 6th row until
there are 45 (49, 51) sts. Work even until 161/2 (17,
171/2)" from beg, end K row. Place a marker at each
end of last row.
Body-Row 1 (Wrong Side): K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.
Row 2: Knit all sts.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until 8 (83/4, 91/4)" above markers.
Leave sts on holder. Leave a long length of yarn
attached to the second sleeve. TIP: The back seam of
our shrug was grafted, but if you prefer to sew the back
seam, bind off the stitches, then sew the back seam.
FINISHING: Graft back sts together: Place stitches
of
first sleeve on a needle. With wrong sides together and
right side of second sleeve facing you on Needle 1 and
first sleeve on Needle 2, thread the long length of yarn
from the second sleeve into a yarn needle. Keeping the
yarn needle and yarn under the points of the knitting
needles, work as follows:
* Pass yarn needle through first st of Needle 1 as if to
knit and slip the stitch off, pass through 2nd st of
Needle 1 as if to purl, but leave the stitch on the
Needle; pass yarn needle through first st on Needle 2
as if to purl and slip the stitch off, pass yarn needle
through 2nd stitch on Needle 2 as if to knit, but leave
stitch on Needle. Rep from * until all the sts are
joined. Fasten off. Take care to draw yarn up so that
gauge of grafting equals gauge of knitted sts.
Sew sleeve seam to markers.

into the ch-2); turn. Rows 2 and 3 form pat. Row 4: Rep Row 2. Row 5 (Increase Row): Ch 1, sc in first dc, 2 sc
in next dc, sc across to last 2 dc, 2 sc in next dc, sc in last
dc; turn – 27 (29, 31, 33) sc. Rep Rows 4 and 5 4 (4, 5, 5) times
– 35 (37, 41, 43) sts. Rep Rows 2-5 7 times – 49 (51, 55, 57) sts.
Work even until 161/2 (17, 17, 171/2)" from beg. Place a marker
at each end of last row.
Body:Work even until piece measures 8 (9, 10,
11)" above markers (center back). Fasten off.
FINISHING: Sew sleeve seams to markers. Sew seam
at center back.
Wrist Edging: With right side facing, join yarn
at sleeve seam; ch 1, sc in each st around; join with a sl st to
first sc. Fasten off.
Body Edging: With right side facing, join yarn
at center back seam; ch 1, sc around body opening, taking care to
keep work flat; join with a sl st to first sc. Fasten off.Weave
in ends.
