wide without handles.
MODA DEA™"Cartwheel™": 8
Balls No. 9605 Bronzeberry CA. MODA DEA™"Curious™": 3 Balls
No. 9910 Black Cherry CB.
GAUGE: 15 sts = 4"; 23 rows = 4" in
St st on larger needles before felting. CHECK YOUR GAUGE.
Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.
NOTE: Felting is not an exact science due to the
many different variables, however up to 25% of the height and 15%
of the width may be lost in the felting process.
BACK (Knit from side to side): With larger needles
and CA, cast on 65 sts. Work 20 rows St st, beg K row, end P row.
Drop
but do not cut CA.
** Join CB and work 6 rows Reverse St st, beg P
row, end K row. Cut CB. Form Ridge: With wrong side facing and smaller
needle, pick up the top loops of the last CA row
(65 sts). Holding both needles together, with CA,
* K 1 st from the front needle and 1 st from the smaller back needle
together at the same time; rep from * across –
65 sts. With CA work 19 rows St st, beg P row, end P row. Drop CA.
Rep from ** 4 more times more. Bind off.
FRONT: Make same as Back.
FRINGE PIECE (Make 2): With larger needles and
CA, cast on 50 sts. Row 1: Bind off 30 sts, K to end. Row 2: K30, drop CA, join CB and cast on 20 sts. Row 3: Bind off 20 sts, drop CB, with CA, K to
end. Row 4: K30, cast on 20 sts.
Rep Rows 1-4 12 more times, then rep Row 1 once more. Bind off –
27 fringes beginning and ending with CA.
FINISHING: Leaving top 7" of sides free, sew
side and bottom seams. Weave in ends.
Felting: Place bag and fringe pieces in the washing
machine in the smallest load with the hottest water setting and
a small amount of
liquid detergent through one wash (agitation only ) cycle. (Option:
1 tablespoon of baking soda in the wash may speed the felting
process.)
Remove bag and check on amount of felting during this process. Two
or more wash cycles may be needed before you will be satisfied with
the effect.
Repeat until pieces are felted and bag is desired size.
Rinse in cold water to stop the felting process and to remove the
soap.
Pull pieces into shape and allow to dry away from sun or heat for
a day or two.
On completion of the process, the bag will be extremely matted and
fringes tangled. Untangle the fringes with fingers. Use a hard nylon
brush to remove pilling and, where necessary, scissors to trim CB
knots.
Assembly: Once bag and fringe pieces are thoroughly
dry, run 3 lines of basting stitches within 1/2" of the top
of the bag and gather this edge to the same width as the top edge
of a fringe piece.
Beginning approximately 1/4" above the fringes, sew the fringe
piece over the gathered edge. Place the handle between the bag and
the
fringe piece; fold the top of the fringe piece over the handle to
the wrong side and secure firmly, sewing through all fabric layers
directly
beneath the handle. Repeat for other side.
