GAUGE: 16 sts = 4"; 26 rows = 4" in
Garter stitch. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to
obtain the gauge.
SPECIAL ABBREVIATION: K1b = Knit in the back loop.
BODY OF BAG (Worked all in one piece): Cast on
15 sts.
Row 1 (Right Side): K1, * (K1, P1, K1b) all in
next st; repeat from * to last st; K1 – 41 sts.
Work even in Garter stitch (K every row) until approximately 13
1/2" from beginning.
Last Row: K1, * sl 1, K2tog, psso; repeat from
* to last st; K1 – 15 sts.
Bind off 5 sts, K5 including st on needle after bind-off, bind
off last 5 sts.
FLAP: Rejoin yarn to 5 sts on needle.
Next Row: K1, (K1, P1, K1b) all in next st, K1,
(K1, P1, K1b) all in next st, K1 – 9 sts. Work even in Garter
stitch for approximately 5 1/2". Bind off.
STRAP: Using two Double Point needles, cast on 5 sts and
work as follows:
Row 1: Knit; DO NOT TURN.
Row 2: Push sts to opposite end of needle, pull
yarn around and Purl; DO NOT TURN.
Row 3: Push sts to opposite end of needle, pull
yarn around and Knit; DO NOT TURN.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until strap measures approximately 29".
Do not bind off until strap placement is satisfactory for length
– you can add or subtract length at that point.
FINISHING: With wrong side facing, fold bag in half and
sew side seams for approximately 5" on each side, leaving approximately
1 1/2" free above seam.
Strap Placement: Beginning at the top of a seam
with the cast-on edge of the strap, pin strap up free edge to top
of bag, leave 7" of strap free for a handle, pin strap down
next free edge to seam, up next free edge to top, leave 7"
of strap free for a handle, pin strap down next free edge to beginning.
If necessary, work more rows for more length or rip out rows to
reduce strap length. When satisfied the handles are in correct position,
bind off the strap sts and sew strap firmly in place.
