Sweater directions are for size 6 months; changes for sizes
1, 2, 3, and 4 years are in parentheses. Hat directions are for
size Small; changes for sizes Medium and Large are in parentheses.
Knitting Needles: 4mm [US 6] and 5mm [US 8].
Yarn needle; stitch markers; six 7/8" buttons; sewing needle
and thread.
GAUGE: 17 sts = 4"; 30 rows = 4" in
pat with larger needles. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size
needles to obtain the gauge.
To Fit Chest: 16 (18, 20, 22, 24)". Finished Chest: 22 (24, 26, 27 3/4, 29 1/2)". Hat Circumference: 16 (17, 18)".
NOTE: Mark first row of each piece as the right side.
CARDIGAN
BACK: With larger needles and MC,
cast on 47 (51, 55, 59, 63) sts. K 2 rows. K 4 rows with CC.
K 4 rows with MC. Rep last 8 rows for pat until
back measures 12 (13, 14, 15, 16)" from beg. Bind off, marking
center 19 (21, 21, 23, 23) sts for back neck.
RIGHT FRONT: With larger needles and MC,
cast on 21 (23, 25, 27, 29) sts. K 2 rows. Work in pat same as for
back until 10 1/2 (11 1/2, 12 1/2, 13 1/2, 14 1/2)" from beg,
end wrong side row.
Shape Neck: Keeping continuity of pat, bind off
7 (8, 8, 9, 9) sts at beg of next row – 14 (15, 17, 18, 20)
sts. Work even until front measures same as back. Bind off.
LEFT FRONT: Work same as right front, reversing
neck shaping.
SLEEVES: With larger needles and MC,
cast on 30 (30, 32, 32, 32) sts. K 2 rows. Work in pat same as for
back, shaping sides by inc 1 st at each end of 5th row, then every
6 (6, 4, 4, 4)th row until there are 42 (46, 52, 56, 60) sts. Work
even until 6 1/2 (7 1/2, 8 1/2, 9 1/2, 10 1/2)" from beg. Bind
off.
FINISHING: Sew shoulder seams. Button
Band: On left front for girls, right front for boys, with
right side facing, smaller needles and MC, pick
up and K45 (49, 53, 57, 61) sts between neck and lower edge. K 8
rows. Bind off.
Buttonhole Band: Work same as for button band
on opposite front until the pick-up row and 3 K rows have been worked.
Mark positions for 5 buttonholes evenly spaced. Buttonhole
Row: [K to marker, bind off 2 sts] 5 times, K to end. Next
Row: [K to bind-off, cast on 2 sts] 5 times, K to end.
K 3 more rows. Bind off. Sew buttons to button band.
Collar: With wrong side facing,
smaller needles and MC, beg after left band, pick
up and K7 (8, 8, 9, 9) sts across bound-off sts, 12 sts up left
neck edge, 19 (21, 21, 23, 23) sts across back neck, 12 sts down
right neck edge, 7 (8, 8, 9, 9) sts across bound-off sts to right
band – 57 (61, 61, 65, 65) sts. K 9 rows. Change to larger
needles and K every row until collar measures 3 (3, 3, 3 1/2, 3
1/2)". Bind off.
Mark 5 (5 1/2, 6, 6 1/2, 7)" down from shoulders on fronts
and back. Place center of sleeve top at shoulder seam and sew in
place between markers. Sew side and sleeve seams.
HAT
With larger needles and MC, cast on 68 (72, 76)
sts. K 4 rows with MC. K 4 rows with CC.
Rep last 8 rows until 4 (4 1/4, 4 1/2)" from beg, end wrong
side row. Keeping continuity of pat, shape crown as follows: Next Row: [K2, K2tog] 17 (18, 19) times –
51 (54, 57) sts. K 1 row. Next Row: [K1, K2tog]
17 (18, 19) times – 34 (36, 38) sts. K 1 row. Next
Row: [K2tog] 17 (18, 19) times – 17 (18, 19) sts.
K 1 row. Next Row: [K2tog] 8 (9, 9) times, K1 (0,
1) – 9 (9, 10) sts. K 1 row. Next Row: [K2tog]
4 (4, 5) times, K1 (1, 0) – 5 sts. K 1 row. Cut yarns, leaving
a long end. Weave yarn through rem sts, gather tightly and fasten
securely.
Brim: With right side facing, larger needles and
MC, pick up and K68 (73, 76) sts across cast-on edge. Next Row: K1 (1, 2), [yo, K6] 11 (12, 12) times,
K1 (0, 2) – 79 (85, 88) sts. K 1 row. Next Row:
K1 (1, 2), [yo, K7] 11 (12, 12) times, K1 (0, 2) – 90 (97,
100) sts. K 1 row. Next Row: K1 (1, 2), [yo, K8]
11 (12, 12) times, K1 (0, 2) – 101 (109, 112) sts. K 1 row.
Bind off. Sew back seam. Sew button to center top.
